One of the biggest questions that I get is how to get motivated to workout.

Unfortunately, I really can’t tell you how you can motivate YOU. Everyone is different in many ways. You have to find your own “Why.” Why do you want to work out? Why do you want to be fit?

Your “why” could be because you want to be feel more attractive. It could be because you want to have more confidence with your shirt off. Or perhaps, it could be because you want to be healthier and be able to keep up with your kids. Or maybe because you just want to be healthier.

What ever your why is, it has to be very strong. Your why is what will give you the drive to push yourself. If your “Why” is not strong enough, then you will not be able to get yourself motivated or be able to give 100% effort to every workout.

Share your “why” here.

  1. Rob Says:

Why?… Tough question… for me I think is about making a better impression on people. Not just because of a better physical appearence, but because being fit, makes me more confident, and people can SEE confidence.

In the end I think it is about having another tool to ensure my success in the things I do.

  2. Jason Says:

I workout because of how great it feels. When you have completed a great workout, all stress is aleviated and a better mood sets in. I think that is my number one reason. I also have many small reasons that add a little motivation to that which include health benefits and well being, more attractive appearance, energy, strength, and goal (because we all know how hard it is to achieve your desired look) it takes determination, motivation, consistancy, and hard work. A little bit of wanting to be the “Alpha Male” might come into play also. lol

  3. Sebastian Says:

My biggest motivation is to take my shirt iff and be comfortable…….. i WAS a really fat and with “elastic” skin, after 5 weeks im starting to feel beter and look better, my bigest motivation is to look good

PS: When i dont have energy i look at your “before-after” pictures and some videos of you working out……. that definately gives me energy’¡¡

  4. Rico Says:

I wanna get fit so I can feel more comfortable in my own skin and have the self confidence to take my shirt offf at the beach. But most of all to try and get rid of my Gynocomastia.

  5. Kouba Says:

In order; to relieve stress, maintain and/or increase strength, and compete in triathlons. I’m 41 years old with nothing to prove except to myself. Vanity is for the young guns. All I want to do is be able to compete against my personal bests. My workouts vary around racing season, which keeps boredom from setting in. The keys are muscle confusion and creativity. Always doing something different helps keep things fun. Above all, the number one motivator is setting a goal. If you don’t have anything you are working toward, it’s pretty much just going through the motions; otherwise known as work;)

  6. Pete Says:

I’m 45 years old and have a 2 year old son. Need I say more?

  7. Iván Says:

My why are women. I want to look better for them, and knowing they can’t stop staring at you is priceless. I know it may sound materialistic, but it works for me.

  8. Maurizio Says:

Why? simple question. i want to get faster and stronger.
i want to jump as high as possible and punch with lightspeed.
this would be a very good advantage in my sport

  9. Mick Says:

I want to get fit because my job requires it. Being a member of the armed forces requires peak physical condition, and without it, your just a reliability. I can’t run very fast, and I tire quickly, but having my goal set to get back into the same kind of shape I was in during basic is my motivator. I know I can look good, and perform better, it’s just a matter of getting back there.

  10. Samson Says:

One of my main goals in life is to be a professional motorcycle road racer. It’s a physically demanding sport and I need to be fit for it. I want to tone up my body and lose fat so I can go faster on my bike. Aside from this, you can’t go wrong having a good body and looking good right? :)

  11. Martin Says:

-It is needed to be truly competitive in any sport I compete in
-I will have improved quality of life and day to day living
-Knowing that the discipline needed for training will spread into other areas of my life
-Remembering how rewarding it is to help somebody else train as hard as I

Good luck to all and keep motivated!

  12. Sean Says:

Why…why? Simply because it allows me to perform at the level I want to perform at. Everything else is trivial. If I can’t train as a martial artist at the level I want to, then I am neglecting my body. I consistently train my body as if it has no limits and never hold back. The video I posted as the website is the only motivation I need.

  13. Mikke Says:

For me there are three reasons:
-Of course, I want to look good. I’m young and I want to take most of it.
-Most of my hobbies requires physical strength. But either of these two alone or together didn’t motivate me enought to exercise properly.
-The most motivating thing for me was (as corny as it sounds) break up with my girlfriend.. Relationship was short and full of passion, and good workout is still one of the very few things that makes me forget the pain in my heart..

This third, and most powerful reason is not someting to reach for, and certainly not the most enjoyable, but it gets me up from the chair…

  14. Winston Says:

A lot of guys here say “I want to look good”, but it runs much deeper than that. When you look good, people treat you differently. They treat you better. The fit guy has no problem getting dates. The fit guy always gets a job promotion over the fat guy. Being in good shape opens doors for you. It’s not that you don’t feel uncomfortable being fat – after all, at some level, you made a decision to be fat. It’s that you feel uncomfortable being perceived as someone who doesn’t have the discipline to do something as basic as invest in himself. That’s like being known for being the guy who never bathes.

What it boils down to is what you want out of other people. You want respect, and you wouldn’t turn away any admiration. You want a social edge, and being fit is as good as it gets for you.

Second to all that, is that people who are fit enjoy a better quality of life. They live longer, they don’t get sick as often, and as I said, people give them preferential treatment.

Third, the sum of those two things is a less stressful life. Being fit benefits your entire life, not just who you see in the mirror.

  15. Donald Says:

I’m a college student. College students are known for gaining weight, always partying and drinking and stuff like that. I don’t want to be like that. Even though with my career choice I could get away with being big, I don’t want to. I want to be able to take my shirt off when I go to a beach with kids that I will someday have. I want to be able to put my kids through sports and be able to help them with it without having to stop to take deep breathes.

I’m 19, I’ve only had one date in my life and because of how I looked the girl found someone else. Thats not a good feeling and that may seem like since I’m young I’m gonna have many chances and everything but if someone is going to dump me because of what I look like then its going to happen over and over again.

My motivation comes from music, from when I get bad stares from interviewers and girls, and fat jokes from my peers and its all going to end cause in another two or three months I’m going to look and feel better!

  16. Raymond Says:

The WHY that i work out

My motivation might be for the wrong reasons but it works. Two of my soccer buddies are riped and have six packs so i made them the bet of
50$ a piece that i would have a six pack by soccer season and that has worked so well i am now the owner of a 4 pack but soon to be six pack and i am feeling great
    And Thats my “Why”

  17. King Says:

To feel not like an outcast, to feel wanted, to want to be respected…
First, you must respect yourself before trying to make others respect you.
I’m 16, ugly and had a limited, bad past. Nothing was ever given to me. I was just fed and played on games, being ignorant.

You should stop asking… stop wishing because, mostly, nothing is going to help you. You’re on your own. It’s your own life…

It’s time to make a change, to prove your own existance, to be awknowledged. Getting a body you can respect for yourself, is just the beginning

  18. Craig Says:

I want to work out to feel absolute confidence with my shirt off, at any time and never feel shy about taking it off. I am not fat, I have mild definition, but it’s mostly obscured by a thin layer of overall fat. Problem for me is this isn’t enough to get me working out, the fatigue and exhaustion of a workout puts me off, and the fact it takes so long for so little progress.

A quote I once heard is a big problem for me…” The need to avoid pain is stronger than the desire for success”.

I need powerful ideas to overcome this and advice for the nutritional side of things too. I am not a kitchen guy. A training parter would make a big difference but I don’t like gyms. I get bored. Help needed for a legitimate case.

  19. Roxy Says:

I love sports, but do not have time to work out. In this period of my life I feel very uncertain and depressed, also unsatisfied. I try to work out body and mind and I think I can do both together. Training makes me feel happy, determined, but sometimes it all seems useless to me. I cannot pull my “work out season” for more than two months and it’s frustrating.
I’m nearly 30 and I want to show the people around me what I can do. If they ever realise it…

  20. p-chan Says:

From the very beginning I had no definite reason. I just.. Go… There were times that makes me want to go to the gym but that was only very temporary. Until now I consciously don’t know why and still I wake up and train but maybe it’s I want a six pack abs or a beach body.

  21. Aaron Says:

I get a big sense of self-satisfaction out of being ripped and buff. I had been obese ALL my life until now – and I will make sure that I NEVER get fat and out of shape again. Ever. Even when I’m really old.

  22. NotHatingJustSaying Says:

    I’m fat

  23. mzrayona Says:

    why?
because my mom had gastric bypass 6 months ago. She’s now down 100 lbs. She only weighs 20 pounds more than me, and is commenting about how i will end up like she did.

Only I cant stand to have her weigh less than me…

  24. RYan Says:

Girls are shallow and care only about looks….that is why I am doing six pack abs. Simple as that

  25. Hyper Says:

I want to be at my mental peak, so I can improve my concentration, focus, memory and clarity of mind at whatever I am doing. Being fit, and regularly working out keeps you at your mental peak; all the physical and social benefits are a nice side effect.

  26. enlightenedwealthinstitute Says:

Why? So I can live every moment with full energy and a clear mind to enjoy more time with friends and family! Tammy Powell at http://enlightenedwealthnstitute.wordpress.com (my “reality” blog!)

  27. enlightenedwealthinstitute Says:

sorry – misspelt my ‘reality blog’ it is http://enlightenedwealthinstitute.wordpress.com/

  28. Aaron Says:

“Girls are shallow and care only about looks….that is why I am doing six pack abs. Simple as that”

HAR HAR – that they are.

And so am I. Just like I don’t like fat girls, they don’t like fat guys. Its a win-win situation having six-pack abs.

  29. Cody Says:

My “why?”. I had a girlfriend a while back which helped motivate me a lot. She was a real looker and I felt I needed to up my game a bit by putting some muscle on. She was usually eyeballing other “dream guys” who had six packs and muscle. I guess I really wanted to show her that any guy could do it. I weigh 140 and I’m 5′3″ with a great six pack and decent arm strength. Turned 18 by the end of my 16 week challenge and my six pack feels like a right of passage. Since then though…well I’ve needed a new “why?” because the relationship fell apart, most likely my fault (obviously eh?). And my new why is just to be healthy and to have something better to do with my time!

  30. Mr MultiVar Says:

Now I am 45 years old and trust me, keeping in shape keeps the girls interested in you no matter what your age is!

It’s amazing to have women of all ages hungry for your body, even or especially when you just finished a sweaty workout or run, so stick with it guys!

Once you experience this effect like Arnel must get every day, there will be no turning back.

  31. Patrick Says:

Why? It’s simple – just because I want to be stronger :)

  32. Justin Says:

Well mine “Why” is kinda interesting. I got few of them: i want to have more confidence in myself, to be healthy and to have more energy, to be stronger than my opponents, but probably my biggest “why” is that i won’t to become strong enough to protect people that are precious to me. Thx Arnel for helping me to achieve my ‘Why”.

  33. Aaron Lassig Says:

motovation, well for me the movie 300 is my major inspriation. i want to look and maybe even better. i want to have a kickass body and show it. really be a Spartan. look at them and every single one of them is absolutly ripped. thats gunna be me.

  34. Daniel Says:

Mainly for health reasons. I want to be able to live a long healthy life. Just recently within the last 3 or 4 years have I been really focusing on my health since yes it is very real. Generalizing, many young people feel, as did I, that they will live forever. There is a reason why people live for so long, it is because they’ve maintained a healthy life style. Now at the age of 34 I feel I’m in one of the best shapes in my life. Life, that is my why.

  35. ProblyTheOnlyGirlOnHere Says:

I’m probably the only female on this site but I’m not trying to get a six pack or anything but I want to get toned and really in shape. Plus I have cheerleading tryouts in 2 weeks! That is my constant motivation! I’m not fat at all, I just need to build up my endurance.

–Well on that note, I’m gonna go exercise. Peace!

  36. Bronx66 Says:

I have been out of shape for some time, ever since leaving the military. Now at 41 I have had enough of being out of shape. Your website has actually been the only thing that motivated me to do something. Over the last three weeks I have tried on and off to get back into working out but your emails have been the most help and for the first time I have worked out sucessfully for the full week and tomorrow I’m going to do you Upper Body Work out for the next 7 days. I’m looking forward to having the body and conditioning that I can have, through your workout regime. Thanks for the modivation.

  37. Brittany Fischer Says:

i have never worked out, and i never plan to!

  38. kenny Says:

I love to workout because you just look better with a hot body! AND it´s HEALTHY and it´s really fun for me to workout and find out my borders!
soorry for my english but i´m from germany :D

  39. Alan Says:

For me, its because I want to feel good about myself when I take my shirt off, and knowing girls are staring because they like what they see is a good thing. Another reason is because I want to be healthy, I have a lot of stuff I want to do and need as much time as possible to do it.

  40. Austin Says:

This summer, I want to be able to swim without feeling uncomfortable about my body.

  41. omar Says:

    why:because of girls

  42. Martin Schmidt Says:

Hi, I’m from Germany and my “why” is: I study Sports and want become a sportteacher. So i have to be fit and to workout is better than hang on the internet.

so: stop watching start living is also a “why” for me

    tschüss

  43. Isaac Says:

Why? Maybe because while sitting on the sofa skimming through hundreds of channels you inevitably come upon the ads that ‘promise’ to turn that flab into fab. Sitting there, undeniably comparing yourself to the models used on television, you suddenly realize that this IS your only shot at life. The only thing stopping you from being that guy in the ad itself is what you are doing at the time…sitting around watching t.v. and probably making mental excuses for yourself.
When I realized that if it were to be, then it would have to be up to me, I instantly had a totally different mindset when it came to reaching the pinnacle of fitness; Working out doesnt suck- Its awesome! ever since this hit me about a year ago, i have gone from a procrastinating 18 year old 230 pound fatass to a 19 year old 185 pound ripped model who is not only being chased by the women I would have never thought would have found me good looking, but also by Chicago’s Chosen modeling agency. Last year I would go from week to week looking under my futon for beer money, whereas now I get booked nearly ten times a month for photoshoots which net me $200 an hour. Arnel, with your exercise regimen, I may not have accomplished what you have in only 16 weeks, but I have totally transformed my body and life over the course of the past year. I am so thankful for everything.

    Isaac

  44. whatup!? Says:

i have a few reasons, the obvious one, to look good for the ladies. also to be the best looking one out of my friends(even though i already am) with the biggest muscles, toned body and such. i also want to be intimidating and kick ass. i don’t like a lot of people, and a lot of people don’t like me, but hey, it’s southern California and thats what goes on.
i mainly do it because i feel good, i love to workout, it is the most fun i can possibly have. i love being healthy and eating healthy and just living life!

  45. amjad Says:

now its alot of reason for me for being fit…
1st for myself..fit make me cofidence.
2nd is for my girl friend.it crazy but it work..she reeally like to touch my body.
3rd my friends..all of them want to have a body like me..
that why i keep it and try to fit..
most of all i really like to workout and become healthy..
    thanks for all video..
    i really enjoyed it..
and it keep make me want more for myself..

  46. Johnathan Says:

My family has a bad history with heart and blood problems. Disbetes, strokes, heart attacks, etc. My dad is already at that point and I don’t wanna be a victim to that sorta lifestyle. I workout now so I can not only feel good about my body, but to prepare myself for 10 years down the road. I start now so I don’t have to start later. It’s also for inspiration to others who feel like they can’t change. If I can do it, so can you!

  47. Alexandru Says:

My Why is because I want to be strong and know that I can stand up against others, look good for my girlfriend (and protect her), feel good with my shirt off and be healthy! But my main motivation is because its for my girl and beacuse…there..is just something about working out that I love. Its painful/hard yet you love it! There something about that last rep that you got to strive and scream from the inside out to finish that really gets me. I love it all in all and its got amazing benefits. Feel good, look good and be confident!!

  48. Alexandru Says:

OH – and because who wouldn’t want to be like James Bourne? =P

  49. Nameless Says:

My why eh? Hm…. Theres many reason’s.

    - I want to look better for the girls because nothing feels worse then being 16 and have never been on a date.
    - I want to be stronger, faster and basically more physically talented. It would benefit me in all sports i do and basically just in life.
    - I want to prove to others that im not some fat kid… And i had the motivation to force myself to get into better shape..

  50. Sean Says:

Just as “Nameless” said, there are many reasons. I am 14 in 10days, and HATE being known as “that fat guy”. I want to show that anyone can make a change in habits. I also love the feeling of finishing a workout, when its so hard ot finish your moaning and screaming lol, because after that, you know you accomplished something great.

  51. Josh Says:

The biggest thing for me is to basically be stronger to get around things and be healthier- comming from a family line with not the best health genetics. This workout also motivated me to start eating healthier, no more quick McFries.

Not going to lie, obviousl i like the attention from people noticing it, but im a shy person so that also gets me overwhelmed when it happens.

I was doing the 16week workout and before i finished people who thought to me as another guy. they’re saying hes a beast! and im probably the 2nd strongest guy in the school (im 13) compared to my friend who has been working out for a year(or more) who is only slightly stronger then me.

    Thanks Arnel!!!

  52. arnel Says:

why? because i want to look gorgeous in front of womens.. yeah!!

  53. Bola Says:

    greetings from canary islands brothers!!

I was swimming up to 16 years and i’m a black belt of judo.
then i went to college and started studying engineering… and gaining weight.

my reason: i just want to feel as years behind with more energy and vitality…. and be able to play an entire football match without throwing the lung out ;)

sorry my english, i don’t have have many occasions to practise it :D

  54. Seth Says:

at 45 years old, I realize I need to be better fit . I am also gay and it is hard to find cute guys wihout looking fit.

  55. sanny Says:

MY WHY IS BECAUSE I WANT TO LIVE A LONG HEALTHY LIFE. I SEE HOW BEING UNHEALTHY CAN LEAD TO MANY HORRIBLE DISEASES AND I DON’T KNOW ABOUT MOST PEOPLE, BUT I WANT TO LIVE NOT WORRYING ABOUT THE NEXT DOCTOR VISIT. ALSO I’M 27 AND I DO NOT WANT KIDS TILL ABOUT 30-32 AND I WANT TO BE ABLE TO KEEP UP WITH THEM AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE. THANKS ARNEL YOU MADE IT ALOT EASIER.

  56. Mckenna Wilson Says:

I want to work out because I enjoy it. I want to be fit because it helps you enjoy life. I want to get six pack abs because I want to prove that it is possible for an average person to get six pack abs if they really try hard.
In fact I want to help other people get fit so they can enjoy life better without having to worry about what they look like. I have a website http://www.takefit.com that helps people understand that keeping fit and in shape is also a lot healthier and cuts down on doctors bills, etc. And anyone can do it! If you really want it, then you can get it :)
